Great Tamale Project

  • Who is invited?

HRS True Hope invites YOU to join us in blessing the people of Piedras Negras, Mexico! Families, adults, teenagers and kids are all welcome to attend.

  • Where are we going?

We are serving the city of Piedras Negras, Mexico, located about 90 minutes southeast of San Antonio. Housing accommodations are planned through our partnership with Instituto David Livingstone. This is a safe and secure church and school where our teams have stayed for many years.

  • When are we going?

We encourage everyone to arrive throughout the evening of Thursday, December 19th. We will head home Sunday, December 22nd. Accommodations can be made for individuals and families who need to arrive or leave on a different date.

  • What are we doing?

Over the years, True Hope has developed long term relationships with churches, pastors, community leaders and charitable organizations throughout the city of Piedras Negras, Mexico. This annual December trip focuses on partnering with those connections to serve local groups at churches, soup kitchens, orphanages, a woman's prison and community-based rehabilitation centers.

Tamale baskets: As the name The Great Tamale Project proclaims, we prepare and give out baskets which contain supplies for a family to make tamales. We buy the contents from a local grocery partner and load over 1,500 tamale baskets. You'll join an assembly line to pack the contents and head out in teams to deliver them.

Posadas: Posada is a Spanish word for a Christmas party. Think more of the Birth of Christ, and less Santa and reindeer. You will join a team, meet up with a Piedras partner and host a Posada. This includes playing games, sharing the joy of Jesus, and distributing tamale baskets and other gifts.

There will also be additional activities including a medical mission and construction project. More info to come!

  • What does it cost?

$50 per person or $100 per family

  • What donations are we collecting?

    • Large or X-Large used, clean t-shirts
    • Scarves
    • Hats and gloves
    • Monetary donations
  • Who can answer other questions I have?

Over the next couple months, we will send out additional communications with more details. If you have a specific question, contact Mitch Holcomb at mitch@hrstruehope.org or 512-887-0807.
